The pilot phase of work by the China Kadoorie Biobank to assess the quality of diagnosis of COPD cases obtained from health insurance database has been completed for ~1,100 randomly selected cases from all the ten regional centres.

This work involves detailed review of medical records/notes of all the cases retrieved from hospital/medical centres by a group of independent respiratory clinicians based at Chao Yang Hospital, Beijing, China. Similar work has already been completed for stroke, IHD, diabetes and cancer, each involving ~1,000 randomly selected cases. The information generated will help to inform the development of long-term strategies for verification of COPD cases and requirements for further phenotyping in the study.
